Gunman convicted of shooting Gov. George Wallace free after 53 years [View all]

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Arthur Bremer, the gunman convicted of shooting former Alabama Governor George C. Wallace is now free, exactly 53 years to the day after the attempted assassination.

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services confirmed Thursday morning that Bremer had completed his sentence.

Bremer shot Wallace on May 15, 1972, while he was campaigning for president in Laurel, Maryland.

He was convicted in August of that year and initially served a 35-year prison sentence before being released on parole in 2007. His parole has now ended.
