(181 posts)If you have a credit union available in your area, close your bank account (profit-making for the capitalists) and transfer your $ to a financial institution which is member owned. Our credit union offers all the services of local banks.
Same for any co-op where you can do your shopping. I am fortunate here in Philly to have several credit unions from which to choose and a fabulous food co-op which just opened our 4th location at the end of my block! We also have the Energy Coop where we get good deals on our heating oil and wind-powered electricity; they also offer natural gas.
We have the Free Library when we want to read a book, and many local booksellers if we wish to purchase a book for a gift. Amazon.com is for reference only.
We avoid the big box stores and use our local hardware store. Sadly, True Value is no longer a co-op but our store is independently owned. Ace Hardware is still a retailer-owned cooperative.
