My mind went sideways in adolescence and young adulthood.

When I was 21 my parents had no idea where I was or what sorts of trouble I was getting into. I'd pretty much worn them out. They no longer had the energy or the financial resources to deal with my kind of crazy.

Fortunately I survived, albeit with some significant PTSD. Somehow I'd managed to avoid the worst sorts of human predators and self-destructive tendencies.

I'd started talking to my parents again by the time I was 25 but I never told them my worst stories.

That's probably why I'm not seeing any deep conspiracies here. Various sorts of mental illness were common in my family and we were very good at hiding them.
