I married a Texan and lived there for over 20 years, myself. I've no allusions about LBJ, but I still say his kind of toughness and lack of need for civil tongue at times was what we needed then... and even more what we need now from a democratic leader. a take no prisoners approach. It was not easy to step into JFK's shoes so quickly...
