and online bloviators who have dogged him unmercifully and made him into a caricature, I think he wanted to be able to talk, in a "friendly" environment, and perhaps offer some insights on his own trauma, descent into the nightmare of drugs, and efforts to recover.

Remember he was one of 2 surviving children in the car accident that killed his mother and sister (seriously injuring he and his brother). Then later in life, you have his older brother die of brain cancer. I can't help but think how profoundly this impacted him and I expect it got reflected in the life that he thrust himself into (impacting his own children). He was fortunate that his feisty grandmother lived long enough to bolster the support structure for the family when Joe became a Senator (and then remarried) and later became VP.
