President Donald Trumps on Friday said that hes considering issuing rebate checks to Americans that would be paid out of the revenue generated by increased tariffs on other countries, CBS News reported. Were thinking about a little rebate. But the big thing we want to do is pay down debt. But were thinking about a rebate, Trump told reporters before leaving for a four-day visit to Scotland.
The president said that the rebate could be for people of a certain income level, but he didnt specify what income threshold hes considering. The federal government has collected about $100 billion in tariff revenue since the Trump administration instituted its higher import duties earlier this year.
That figure could increase to about $300 billion per year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox Business Mornings with Maria earlier this week. Its not the first time that Trump in his second White House term has pitched the idea of issuing rebate checks to Americans.
The president in February said that he was looking at using 20% of the savings from Elon Musks cost-cutting task force, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, to provide direct payments to taxpayers. Those checks have not materialized, with House Republicans saying that they were concerned that such payments could increase the national deficit.
