Congressman Danny Davis is set to soon announce his retirement and throw his support behind another state rep to fill his role.
Sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NBC Chicago that Davis would announce his retirement during a press conference Thursday. At the same time, Davis will endorse State Rep. LaShawn Ford for the 7th Congressional district seat.
Davis, who will turn 84 in September, was first elected to Congress in 1996 and currently serving his 15th term in Congress. He has spent nearly 30 years representing Chicago's West Side and western suburbs of the 7th District. He has also served as a Cook County Board Commissioner and Chicago alderman.
Facing the crowded field in last November's election, Davis secured a slew of high-profile endorsements in the race, including from Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, among others.
