If they put out fake numbers not developed by the actual statisticians who work on the programs, it will be obvious and whistleblowers will call them on it. So stopping publication of the data always kind of made sense as the move the would make.

Make no mistake, this would be a very bad thing, and effectively an admission that they know the data will look bad for Trump, but it would be infinitely better than trying to put out fake numbers.
