President Donald Trump will meet one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of their summit on Friday in Alaska, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNN during the press briefing today.
Trump expects to focus squarely on ending the war in Ukraine, leaving other issues the Kremlin has said could be up for discussion including normalizing US-Russia ties for another time.
Why this matters: Trump and Putin have met individually, without aides, previously. In 2017, they met alone during their first encounter at the G20 summit in Hamburg. Then in 2018, they sat one-on-one in Helsinki, Finland, after which Trump sided with Putin over US intelligence agencies on the question of Russian election interference.
Both encounters included translators but not high-ranking aides. After the Germany meeting, Trump reportedly asked his translator for his notes.
