1. Hysterical reporting. The airplane didn't "burst into flames," there was a fire in one engine.

A 757 and other airliners can fly and climb on a single engine, and the aircraft has an engine fire suppression system. If there had been an actual engine fire the pilots would have pulled the engine fire handle and executed the procedure for a single-engine climb, turn, and return to the airport. It sounds like what actually happened was a compressor stall, which can be caused by a variety of things and which is an interruption to the intake of air into the engine's compressor section, resulting in loss of power, loud bangs and sometimes smoke and flames from the exhaust section. They'd have shut that engine down to avoid further damage. It probably was frightening for the passengers, and it certainly would not have been the fault of Boeing, but the report makes it sound much worse than it was - but The Mirror is a tabloid, and it it bleeds it leads.
