They take something completely ordinary, and then punch it up as if they're doing something remarkable.

Every murder investigation will do at least a cursory examination to determine whether there are accomplices. I mean, duh. Here, they punch up that utterly ordinary task with the words you identified: "We are meticulously investigating theories and questions..."

This is essentially corporate bullshit coming out of the FBI director. He's saying almost nothing, as you correctly state. Good post!
