This may be counter intuitive but the "billionaires" know exactly what is coming and are currently doing something about it, as only they can. They know full well that reducing the population reduces the planet's climate load and AI replaces workers and that they want fortified enclaves in the mean time. It seems the rubes who they have somehow brainwashed into believing buying gasoline is patriotic are the folk who are unaware of what's coming, and if they do, they are obviously unaware that there is no plan for them to be invited to the enclave, the mother ship, the biodome, whatever.
