My mom used to paint (oils) as a hobby while we were little. She had a wood storage box of Grumbacher oils and a big easel (with wheels), plus a bunch of stretched blank canvases (different sizes) that were ready for use. She took some lessons in palate knife painting from a neighbor. I was always fascinated at her ability to use color (not just painting but also with flower arrangements and display of the seasonal decorations that she would buy and pull out of the closet throughout the year). She used to complain about not being able to capture "perspectives" (like 3-D dimensions, etc) though, something that my dad was good at.
