10. "I met him in Philadelphia at a book signing"

I also saw him here in Philly. He was the every first "top elected official" that I got to see "in person", and it was by happenstance...

Back in 1993, Philly was opening the new PA Convention Center (that was replacing the old Civic Center), and my mom wanted to go downtown to see it. I took her down there and we discovered that they were having the ribbon-cutting ceremony for it that day and (newly elected) VP Al Gore was doing the honors. So as we approached where the stage was, we stopped and stayed back when we saw a sign with an arrow that said "VIP" posted in front of a cattle chute barrier leading to the front of the stage. Suddenly some of the staff in the crowd hustled us into a line and through the chute, and we ended up standing about 10ft from the stage to watch the ceremony up close and personal. LOL Pretty exciting!

I just found a old article about that ceremony from 1993 (updated in 2021) - https://www.mcall.com/1993/06/27/philly-glows-for-opening-new-convention-hall-called-symbol-of-revitalization/
