A large segment of American society is proudly uneducated and remains ignorant but they are united by their fear of the future coming with demographic changes they cannot control. So they are tricked into supporting foolish leaders who tell them comforting lies and to blame The Other. This only works for a short time in history until they themselves become The Other.
