is that 'late night' (including the leading Cobert) has been losing viewers steadily for years - and more recently hemorrhaging money and advertisers (again not over a single year, but systematically over multiple).

As an 'institution' - the format appears to all objective measures, to be dying. And 'for profit' formats are not (nor ever have been) willing to subsidize ... There may remain a niche place (and audience) - but it seems increasingly clear it is not on network TV.
