The Miami Herald regularly publishes horror stories about the latest cosmetic surgery procedures gone wrong, often leaving patients permanently disfigured, hospitalized or dead. Given the high out-of-pocket cost of cosmetic surgery (it's not covered by insurance), Miami is also home to many unlicensed plastic surgeons, "doctors" with no formal medical training or degrees, offering cut-rate procedures out of their own homes.
