It's been a while since I've read 1984, but if I remember correctly that is the origin of the term "down the memory hole". It was a chute on the side of Winston Smith's desk that he dropped articles and news reports into, and on the bottom of that chute was a furnace that burned up the articles that Winston Smith had just "fixed" so that they now agreed with the history that Big Brother preferred.
