(8,365 posts)40. Vikings were all over the place in the old world, and even in the new world,
which they were the first Europeans to know about. A surprising number settled in France. They even reached what is now Russia - where the locals told them, "Hey, you guys seem to be really well organized. Why don't you stay here and become our ruling class?" - not in those exact words, of course - and many did - which explains a lot IMO.
So different from the Ukrainian Cossacks, who mercenaries, for hire to any riler, but not permanently sworn to any ruler.
