Giving money to people on the street can prevent someone from going into withdrawal. We tend to think that it's their own fault, but withdrawal can lead to convulsions and/or heart attack. I know you can't relieve someone of their body's craving but for today, they'd be fine. Today is my 47th sobriety anniversary, but I can remember almost losing my life while in withdrawal. Make of this what you will.
