CORRECTION: Woman umpire will work home plate SUNDAY [View all]

Last edited Sat Aug 9, 2025, 11:35 PM - Edit history (1)

The Marlins-Braves game starts at 1:35 p.m.EDT (10:35 a.m. PDT).

Jen Pawol (sounds like "Powell" ) is the first woman to umpire an MLB game during the regular season. She had first base in the first game of today's day-night doubleheader and is working third base in the second game, being played right now.

A few women have umpired in MLB spring training games and in the minor leagues, but none in the regular season until now. Pam Postema spent 13 years in the minors, four of them (I think) in Triple-A, where she got high ratings from managers. She would've nade it to The Show, probably in 1990, if MLB Commissioner Bart Giamatti, who championed her, hadn't died unexpectedly. (Postema later wrote a book with the marvelously cheeky title, You've Got to Have Balls to Make It in This League.
