Somebody's takedown of Salvador DALI [View all]
My utter lack of credentials in an infinite number of topics in human knowledge doesn't stop me from braying opinions, especially on the internet, which elicits a resounding "Ho hum" from the internet.
However, I have sagaciously stayed away from Art, mainly from a lack of interest along the lines of the "royal Prince" Phillip's saying, "There's no accounting for taste."
But recently, one of the random things in my couple or three years of enrollment in The University of YouTube was "Ascension" by the aforesaid DALI. Before that, I had near-zero exposure to his stuff - just a few, completely unappealing samples and a couple of videos of his t.v. appearances (CAVETT, What's My Line) that gave me the impression that he was an eccentric showboat in a somewhat harmless way.
But that "Ascension" thing totally grabbed me - not in the religious way and not in the beauteously artistic way - but something about the shockingly spiritual conception of it. I don't know whether it's the Pisces feet thing, dirty at that. I attempted to find a poster of it and ended up just printing out a letter-sized one and laminating it taped facing my bed. This:

I had a bit of inkling about his flamboyant life, dirty laundry relationships, but wrote it off as the usual offbeat stuff of uninhibited creators. What popped up now was this video, worse, although not that unexpected, and its focus is more about his personality than about art criticism, fwiw. ---- ON EDIT, oh, forgot the *worst* parts, that he was a fervid adherent of Fascist FRANCO, very susceptible to HITLER. Well, it's been an age old dilemma, what to do with genius types who are horrible in politics or as humans, such as proto- and actual-Nazi Richard WAGNER.
