9. The problem is that developers don't want to build affordable housing

They only want to build McMansions, and most people can't afford them.

I live in Pittsburgh where we do still have affordable housing, but it's in the city not the suburbs. The houses are older and require some work and upkeep. Brand-new houses don't usually require that. Any young people who want to put in the time and sweat equity to fix up an old house, they can do well in Pittsburgh because we have many available choices.

I'm not sure if that's true in California, but people keep moving there anyway for the jobs.
