A man was shot and killed in the District Monday hours after President Donald Trump announced he was taking control of the D.C. police to stop crime. The killing occurred in Northwest Washington within a half-mile of two of the high-profile homicides the president cited at his news conference.
The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. in the 1200 block of 12th Street NW, at the northern edge of the citys downtown. Based on preliminary police figures, it may have been the 100th homicide in the capital this year.
The site is less than a half-mile west of where a congressional intern was killed by a stray bullet last month near 7th and M Streets NW. It was about a half mile north of the K Street block where a former government official was killed in his car last year during an apparent attempt to carjack him.
Both of those killings received substantial attention when they occurred and were among incidents described by Trump at the White House on Monday in a news conference giving his reasons for taking control of the D.C. police.
Makes you wonder what Trump's show of force is doing. It doesn't appear to be doing much for crime or safety.
