Rauner spent nearly $36 a vote to become Illinois governor

Records show Rauner spent nearly $24 million in the last three months of 2014 in governor's race.


Republican Bruce Rauner spent a record $65.3 million — or nearly $36 a vote — to become Illinois' new governor, newly filed state records showed Thursday.

In the last three months of 2014 alone, Rauner spent nearly $24 million, including nearly $22.8 million from Oct. 1 to Election Day on Nov. 4, according to the State Board of Elections filing.

Rauner, who was inaugurated Monday as Illinois' 42nd governor, is a private equity investor who is perhaps the wealthiest person to run for the state's top job. He has estimated his wealth at more than $500 million.

In making his first bid for public office, Rauner spent expansively on television ads, first to win the March 2014 GOP primary election and then during the general election against Democratic incumbent Pat Quinn. Rauner's advertising initially was aimed at burnishing a frugal image despite his financial success but turned sharply negative against Quinn throughout the fall campaign.

In addition to TV ads, Rauner gave $4.4 million to the Illinois Republican Party during the closing weeks of the campaign, attempting to resuscitate a moribund political organization and create a get-out-the-vote operation.

Governor-elect Bruce Rauner (R) won a slim majority of the total votes and by 142,284 votes over incumbent Patrick Quinn (D). Voter turnout was 49 percent, and compared to the 2010 gubernatorial election was down two percent, or 112,353 less voters in the 2014 election.
Incumbent Democratic Attorney General Lisa Madigan won decisively with 59 percent of the total vote, beating Republican challenger Paul Schimpf who received little support from the Republican establishment in Illinois.

Rauner pulls plug on Quinn's last-minute moves

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has pulled the plug on Democratic predecessor Pat Quinn’s attempt to raise the minimum wage for state contractors, require the governor to release more details about his tax returns and stop Illinois State Police from detaining people based on their immigration status.

Rauner’s executive orders, issued late on a Friday when fewer people are paying attention to the news, would effectively cancel seven edicts Quinn made during his final days as the head of state government.

The tax disclosure requirement was among a number of final jabs Quinn took at Rauner, who the ex-governor frequently criticized for releasing only limited income tax data during the campaign. Rauner has said he has turned over more information than required under law. There is no requirement under law.

"It is clear that too many of Pat Quinn's actions during his final weeks in office were in an effort to settle political scores and not wholly aimed at serving the public's interest," Rauner spokesman Lance Trover said in a statement. The administration says it will decide on a "case-by-case basis" if any of Quinn's orders may be "re-implemented."
