Candidate for governor threatens to wipe out Education Department over Critical Race Theory. Actually, he can’t.


Michigan gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley this week released a statement threatening to eliminate the state Department of Education if it didn’t immediately address his concerns -- he wants to ban Critical Race Theory and mandate that all classes be livestreamed.

But legal experts say there would be one big thing standing in his way: the state constitution.

Kelley is among the Republicans in Michigan and nationwide outraged by Critical Race Theory -- a framework in education that helps everyday people understand race and racism on an institutional and structural level. It is not taught in Michigan’s K-12 schools.

Kelley said he would work with the Michigan Department of Education to implement a series of changes, including livestreaming all classes so parents could monitor them and implementing an “anti-communism curriculum.”
