Crumbley is a real estate agent.

Meaning she knows the code to her company's lock boxes on the houses that they're currently showing/selling.

They have utilities on for the showings usually, and residents are used to people entering and exiting at odd hours.

If you're trying to lay low, avoid the search parties, but don't have an extensive amount of resources, an unoccupied house provides, shelter, security, and defense from surveillance.

Perhaps the police should check their company's listings, especially the older doorboxes.

Fleeing was the problem.
