Darren Masier began studying at NC State in 2009. Fourteen years later, he and his classmate, Jeremy Tuchmayer, were both diagnosed with leukemia. That same year, NC State closed Poe Hall after initial testing revealed PCBs throughout the education and psychology building. The chemicals are considered a known carcinogen by the World Health Organization. After the closure, NC State paid a consulting firm to conduct more testing of the building. Around that time, distrust between people who worked and studied in Poe Hall and the university began to brew.

Three months after the closure, in February 2024, a WRAL investigation found that NC State quietly pulled out of a federally funded investigation into the health effects of working in Poe Hall.
As a result, Masier and other workers and students battling cancer were concerned over the impartiality and accuracy of the building testing and pushed to have more independent testing done.
