State Senate Democrats dream of reversing GOP policies [View all]

If North Carolina Democrats regain majority control of the legislature, one of the first things they would do is boost school funding, state Sen. Dan Blue of Raleigh told an audience of about 35 in Fayetteville on Thursday evening.

"My first priority would be to adequately fund every school board in the state," Blue said, generating applause, "so that every child had a good or great teacher."

Blue is the minority party leader in the state Senate. He spoke at a town hall meeting at John D. Fuller Recreation Center in west Fayetteville with fellow Democratic senators Ben Clark of Hoke and Cumberland counties and Mike Woodard of Durham.

The Democrats have been out of power since the Republican wave of 2010 gave the GOP majority control of the state House and Senate. The Democrats are not forecast to take back majority control in this year's elections. Published reports and political insiders have recently said the party is concentrating its efforts on picking up enough seats in the state House to break the Republicans' veto-proof majority in that chamber.
