in Madison, WI, the pill was technically only legal for married women. There was one doctor in town (at least one) who would write a prescription for anyone. He was a middle aged GP, very pleasant. You picked up your pills at his office rather than the pharmacy. His rationale was that he'd rather write the prescriptions than clean up after a botched abortion. He also delivered babies and did whole-family care. He lived into his 90s and so did his partner, who was a good deal younger and died just last week.
