Hamblen Schools to offer state-required firearms course [View all]

Hamblen County Schools will offer a required firearms safety course for all K-12 students as required by the state.

According to an email sent to families of all Hamblen County students, in 2024, the Tennessee General Assembly passed legislation, requiring instruction of firearms safety in schools, outlined in Tennessee Code Annotated §49-6-1016.

Beginning with this school year, all counties shall annually provide students, grades K-12 with age appropriate and grade appropriate instruction on firearm safety.

“The goal of this legislation is to increase firearms safety knowledge so our students know what to do in the event they find a firearm,” Bunch said. “Our instruction will be through videos developed in partnership with the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office, and we will cover only the topics listed in the pamphlet.”

Bunch also made it clear that there will be no firearms – real or toy – used during the lessons.

This is what red states do instead of passing safe and effective gun laws.
