Newport News Shipbuilding wins $2.99 billion Stennis overhaul contract [View all]
Newport News Shipbuilding won a $2.99 billion contract for the refueling and overhaul of the carrier USS John C. Stennis a project it has been working on for years the Naval Sea Systems Command said.
The multi-year Refueling and Complex Overhaul of a nuclear carrier is considered one of the most complex engineering challenges around.
The work includes refueling the carriers nuclear reactor, as well as an overhaul and modernization of equipment and structures on the 25-year-old ship. The aim is to get it into shape for the next 25 years.
The shipyard built the Stennis, which was commissioned in 1995. The overhaul will essentially gut the ship and rebuild, replace or refurbish all of the systems inside, as well as add new technology and equipment developed for carriers over the past quarter-century.
