Moron Ron Johnson holds COVID-19 hearing accusing health officials of ignoring alternative therapies [View all]

At a Senate hearing Tuesday chaired by Wisconsin Republican Ron Johnson and lambasted by Democrats and some medical experts, a group of doctors touted alternative treatments for COVID-19 and accused “organized medicine” and government health agencies of suppressing their use.

One witness from Wisconsin, Pierre Kory, a pulmonary specialist at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, touted as a “wonder drug” Ivermectin, used to treat parasitic infections and a medication that the National Institutes of Health has recommended against using for COVID-19 outside of clinical trials.

“We are telling the world this is the solution to COVID-19,” said Kory, a claim few others have made for any medication.

Others cited hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump. The Food and Drug Administration this past summer revoked its emergency use authorization for the drug as a COVID treatment, saying it was ineffective and the risks could outweigh the benefits.

Johnson and the witnesses he called Tuesday accused the medical establishment and health agencies of failing to explore and promote the use of relatively inexpensive repurposed drugs — those previously approved for other uses — as early interventions against COVID.

“They’re safe and they’re cheap and they just might be incredibly effective,” said Johnson, who asserted that “tens of thousands of people have lost their lives” because government agencies have focused on expensive “silver bullet” solutions instead of medications already in use for other diseases.
