Private donations paid for the rock to be removed. Erratics are all over the landscape in my neck of the woods and one that size would be viewed as a nuisance to be removed during any building program. The fact that this natural feature was referred to by that name by students and faculty is more than enough justification for anyone on campus to want it removed.
