I learned a valuable trick from a retired US Marshall....if you will talk very little and just listen when you meet someone they will fill the void of silence and usually tell you everything you would ever want to know about them.

One bought a truck and then refused to make payments, claiming it was illegal according to US Code xxxx - it was eventually repossessed. The other refuses to get a drivers license, etc. Cops have jailed him more than once. It is amazing the kind of people you can find in rural Texas. They can hide out for the most part and cops seldom mess with them until they get out in the public - usually because they have multiple arrest warrants.
