He had a private pilot certificate with no instrument or other ratings received in May 2018.

The ceiling was reportedly low and he would be required to stay below it to remain VFR.

Most likely he ended up in the clouds and became disoriented. It happens all too often with low time pilots. It’s tragic he took 6 other people with him.
