9. It's by no means a universal CofE practice

I would say it depends on whether your parents taught you to do it (did William?), or you've gone in for some formal role in the church (I think it's something I've noticed that priests, lay readers, and so on are likely to do). Though atheist now, I was confirmed as a teenager in the CofE, and it wasn't taught to us as a "you should be doing this".
