as I understand it, the paid version includes "live" protection, other stuff. I never used the MBAM pro and only use online scanners like Eset or Kaspersky from time to time, no real-time protection for me... I make regular backups just in case.

One that gets good reviews is Emsisoft Anti-Malware https://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/antimalware/
Similar to MBAM there's a free (on demand) & Pro version (Real-Time, Online)

Read some good revues for Zemana Antimalware https://www.zemana.com/?__c=1
I'm not familiar with the product, it's on my to-do test list.
