I've found that safe and smart browsing is more effective than a resource hogging virus scanner, any day of the week.

I have a thumbdrive with a bootable copy of Windows and a bunch of great malicious software removal tools in the event I DO have a virus.
Never had to use it for myself, but I've rescued a few work computers and friends' computers with it.

I keep nothing of importance on my PC, anyhow. It's mostly for watching movies and streaming media around the house.

My Mac is my main machine, which I keep backed up in triplicate.
