I had a tree come through my roof during a storm 2 years ago, and we had to move out of the house for 2 months for repairs. The day it happened I called AT&T and told them what happened and asked to suspend the internet charges (we still needed the 3 cell phones on the contract). The person on the phone agreed without hesitation and told me to call back when I wanted it back on. It never showed up on the bill.
I was happily surprised at how well my encounter with their phone rep went; sorry you aren't having as much luck.
