4. Some folks here may find this helpful, but the Mail and these scientists "discovered" old news!

I did this a few years ago using a template I downloaded and printed out onto card:



Just glue some foil on it, assemble, pierce a couple of holes for the antenna to fit through and you're good to go. It cost me vastly less than $40!



It significantly improved reception in our cranky house where we needed it, and means we're not broadcasting to the rest of the street.

There are other designs out there, but this is one of the simplest. Just Google Windsurfer wifi
