5. Start by checking the drive.

Typically when that happens it is because the drive is going bad.

If you open windows explorer find the C drive right click on it and chose properties. In the window that pops up at the top find the tools tab then click on error checking have it scan the drive and fix errors. You will need to reboot for it to happen and it should begin the check before you get into windows if it doesn't then repeat the process. That will go through the drive and look for errors and attempt to fix them.

It is fairly common for it not to run the check correctly on disks that have issues keep trying till it does it. It can take some time so do it when you have the time available for it.

After that completes it would probably be a good idea to check the system files by opening and administrative command prompt and typing sfc /scannow that will run through and check all the system files for consistency.

If all of that comes back clean take a hard look at your security software. They often cause issues with updates as they try to lock down system files.

If it is crashing though I suspect the drive is on it's way out.
