messages have a numerical limit.

Minutes used to be calculated "up"-- a 10 second call was a minute, a 1 minute 10 second call was 2 minutes. That may have changed, but I doubt it. If true it means if you get an answering machine you're stuck for a minute. Have to check, but I think minutes used to go for around 10 cents per.

If you don't use it much and you've got coverage in places you're going to be, it's not a bad deal. Just hope you don't need CS. And Instagram will kill your budget.
