2. Second the notion: Ad blockers can help prevent malware downloads.

IMO, malware is delivered mostly through phishing (links in emails, messages and web pages) and via ads, which are rarely vetted.

Web sites just subscribe to some ad service now even knowing what ads will be delivered. They just see the dollar signs.

Ad-blockers, used in significant number, can transform the internet from a cesspool of spyware and malware into something better.

(and do support DU with memberships, so they don't have to show ads!)

One can add an ad-blocker in less than a minute.
