1. It would be useful for people who travel overseas a lot

They would simply buy a SIM (or whatever they're called these days) card for each country and avoid roaming charges, especially for data. In addition, they would have a local phone number in every country they visited, so people could contact them easily.

Also, T-Mobile offers a prepaid option with the iPhone. I looked into it, but the upfront price for the phone was so high that a contract is more manageable from month to month.
