If you were trying to run the installer DVD from the internal DVD drive, do you have an external DVD you can try ?
I assume you ran Disk Utility from the installer CD before beginning installation ...
I doubt if later MBs will fit properly, since the ports are prone to change in position and number from one model to the next. Also, the heat sinks for later CPUs might be radically different. It might be more affordable to just buy a used iMac; they're getting pretty cheap.
iMac 5,1 here ... replaced the HD and PSU so I know what you mean ... 
Does the iMac boot OK in Target Disk mode ?
You can also enter Target Disk Mode by rebooting your Mac and holding down the T key as it boots.Apr 16, 2015
If so, you can try running the installer on another Mac and install to the iMac with a FireWire cable (if you have one ...).
Lastly, can you boot from a Lubuntu or Puppy Linux Live CD ? If so, maybe there's a problem with the installer disk (not necessarily the only thing wrong, though).
