We had the same situation with my great grandmother back in the 70’s. On our way to see the family in West Virginia we stopped to see her at a rest home in Ohio. A truly evil man, her son, had hidden her away. When we got to WV The family was having a cookout and my mom mentioned “Oh yeah. We saw her this morning”. Jaws dropped. I didn’t realize what was happening.

I have no idea how my mom found her (given the technology of the day) but my mom is truly something else.
