I don't want to voluntarily abandon it. Mr. Shreve is inviting us to share its costs more equally, and I hear his righteous indignation over the fact that the disadvantaged among us pay a higher price for the Pax Americana than the people who benefit most from it. I hear that, but I don't want to either end or cripple the Pax Americana, so I remain suspicious of his proposals.
