Over the course of more than a century of protests, petitions, threats, and bloodshed, the classroom had grown increasingly secular. From the 1830s to the early 1960s, this process had been gradual, erratic, and decentralized. The only serious efforts to impose a national standard, the proposed constitutional amendment barring states from aiding parochial and other religious schools, had failed. Then the Supreme Court stepped in.
