I'll get prices from the popular sites, and then go book on the website for the airline/car/hotel.

I did work for one of those sites for a while, though, and learned that if your booking has hotel, (like air/hotel) you can get a relatively meaningful discount. So it could make sense if your plans are pretty solid, but watch for whether the hotel is refundable or not.
